Chemical × Lubricants
Lubricants are substances generally liquids that are applied in between two surfaces to reduce wear and friction between them. A lubricant offers a film which is protective and which separates and smoothes two touching surfaces, thereby reducing the friction between them. Lubricants interact chemically with all the surfaces such that the contact occurs with only free and smooth lubricant. Abrasive particles in this process get dissolved in the lubricants and they themselves also become very good cleaners and solvents. Lubricants are generally made up of majority base oil and minority of additives which are added to give desirable characteristics. The most common use of lubricants is to separate two moving surfaces in a system. This benefits you highly since the friction reduces thereby reducing the operating noise, heat generation and vibrations. Both liquid and gas lubricants are capable of transferring heat. However, liquid lubricants tend to be more effective because they have high specific heat capacity. Surface to surface friction is more than lubricant to surface friction; therefore use of a lubricant reduces friction of a system on a whole. Reduced friction can benefit you in many ways like cut down in formation of wear particles, reduced heat generation and improved efficiency.
