Chemical products which are made petroleum i.e. hydrocarbon origin raw materials are called as petrochemicals. Though some chemical compounds which have petroleum origin can also be made from other sources like natural gas or coal, still the major source will always be petroleum. Petrochemicals can also be defined as products which cannot be burned as a fuel. The two major categories of raw materials of petrochemicals are olefins which include propylene and ethylene and aromatics which include xylene and benzene isomers and both them are manufactured in very large quantities. Olefins are molecules of hydrogen and carbon which appear as short chains of maximum four carbons in length. In oil refineries these are produced from hydrocarbons through catalytic reforming and chemical cracking like steam cracking. Aromatics consist of a structure of six carbon ring. The presence of oxygen/ hydrogen group i.e. OH group implies that it is an alcohol. These are also produced in oil refineries through catalytic reforming or same processes. These building blocks further give rise to a wide variety of chemicals and some other materials utilized in the industry. These materials include solvents, monomers, adhesives and detergents. From these polymers, oligomers and monomers are further produced resins, plastics, elastomers, fibres, gels and certain lubricants. The various petrochemicals available are:Ethylene which is the simplest olefin and is used as a monomer, a chemical feedstock and a ripening hormone.Polyethylene which is polymerized ethylene. Ethanol which is produced by hydration of ethylene. Ethylene oxide is also called as oxirane and is produced by ethylene oxidation.Tetrachloroethylene is used as degreaser and as a solvent for dry cleaning. Polyvinylchloride is a type of plastic utilized for tubing, piping etc. Polyolefins like poly alpha olefin are often used as lubricants. Alkyl benzene a kind of aromatic hydrocarbon used as a precursor for sulfonate surfactant.
