Chemical × Polymers
A substance constituted by molecules having large molecular mass and constituted by repetition of monomers or structural units which are bonded by covalent bonds. The word polymer has been derived from Greek words polu meaning many and meros meaning parts. The best examples of polymers include DNA, plastics and protein. The polymer word usually suggests plastic but polymers consist of a wide group of synthetic and natural materials which have a vast range of properties and uses. Natural polymers consist of DNA and RNA which are inevitable for life processes and genes. It’s because RNA, the messenger, the polymers like peptides, proteins and enzymes exist. Synthetic polymers are called as plastics which include the very well known nylon and polyethylene. However they can be categorized in the following groups like Thermoplastics, Elastomers, Thermosets. Artificial polymers have got a variety of applications which include like Food packaging, Fibres, Pipes, Tubing, Films. The industry of personal care also utilizes polymers help in binding, texture of products and moisture retention for eg. in conditioners and hair gels The synthetic polymers consist of: like Polyamide, Polybutadiene, Polycarbonate, Polyethylene, Polyimide, Polypropylene, Polystyrene, Poly (ether sulphone), Poly (ethylene glycol), Poly vinyl chloride Both synthetic and natural polymers are have got a wide variety of uses. Survival without both of them is impossible since they take a very prominent position in our lives. Polymer industry is blooming today because of the increase in demand of polymers with their popularity.
