Rosin or Resin is a hydrocarbon secretion of various plants mainly coniferous trees. It is quite valuable because of its chemical components and usage like in adhesives, varnishes, incense of perfumes, and as a prominent raw material source in organic synthesis. Fossilized resins form the source of amber. This term is utilized for synthetic substances of same properties. Synthetic resins are substances with same properties of natural resins i.e. viscous liquids which are capable of hardening. They are manufactured by soaping or esterification of organic compounds. The transparent and hard resins like dammars, copal’s, sandarac and mastic are mainly used for cement and varnishes. The odoriferous and soft oleo resins which include turpentine, frankincense, copaiba, elemi and gum resins consisting of essential oils which include scammony, ammoniacum, gamboge, asafoetida, and myrrh are mainly used for incense and therapeutic purposes. Rosin, which is the form of resin, is utilized for the maintenance of bows of stringed instruments like double bass, violin, cello and viola since it is capable of adding friction in the hair. It can also be used by ballet dancers in their shoes so that they have an incresed grip which will help them on slippery floor. It has also been utilized by artists like Eva Hesse for sculpture and other artwork. It is also utilized in skateboard decks since resins makes it quite durable preventing it from getting chippings, pressur cracks or breakage. Lastly, Akira Ifukube, the one who wrote and made the various godzilla films music also composed thr roar of godzilla by rubbing the strings of double bass with leather covered with resin. Resins have a gained a lot of popularity because of their various uses and are widely used in almost all industries. The surviva of any industry without resins is not possible. Their popularity can also be seen by increased number of manufacturers of resins.
