Chemical × Solvent
A liquid that can dissolve a gaseous, liquid or solid solute which results in a solution is called as a solvent. Water is the most common example of solvents used in everyday life. Organic i.e. carbon containing chemicals are also a common example of solvents and are called as organic solvents. Solvents generally have a low boiling point, therefore, they tend to easily evaporate or they can be easily removed by distillation, dissolved substance being left behind. Thus solvents should be inert so that they do not react chemically with any dissolved compound. Soluble compounds of a mixture can also be extracted with the help of solvents for example brewing of tea or coffee with hot water. Solvents are generally colorless and clear liquids and they also have a characteristic odor. The amount of compound dissolved in a specific volume of solvent is called as concentration of a solution. And, the maximum amount of compound dissolved in definite volume of solvent at a particular temperature is the solubility.
